Dark and Moody Botanical Photography

I just finished another Skillshare class: Dark and Moody Botanical Photography.  This short class was actually very inspiring, full of ideas for composition and editing of botanical photos in to capture a moody feel.  

You wouldn't think there would be very many botanicals to photograph in February in Michigan, but I headed out with my camera on a wet cloudy afternoon and I was surprised at all I found.

I used Adobe Lightroom for editing.  I usually am trying to add light to my photos, so it was an interesting challenge to darken my photos while keeping them interesting and enhancing the textures.

I am excited to try this with some flowers in the spring.

In Switzerland

Galaxy Skyline Silhouette

I don't know if you remember from a little while back that I had painted a splotchy watercolor thing, thinking maybe I would do a skyline silhouette with it?

Well, I finally got around to finishing that!

I used inking pens and black marker for the silhouettes, and a white gel pen to put in the stars.

I had fun making this piece, and I kind of like it...enough that I might even hang it up somewhere at the little apartment my sister and I are moving into this week. We'll see. :)

When the Door is not Entirely Closed

I was wondering what all the rustling was, and whether the dog was someplace she shouldn't be.

He decided to take a little stroll upstairs - twice.

He wasn't frantic or shy at all, but eventually I manoeuvred him down the stairs toward the open window.
"But it's cold out there!"

A Different Sort

This is purposely based on someone else's work. It is a textural practice piece.  Note, for instance, the salt effect in the upper left, spattering, gel pen accents, ink work, and pencil marks.
