Rainy Excursion

Yesterday

All but one day here has had balmy autumn weather, but that one day was very soggy. We had chosen to go to the Bamboo Forest. We got up veeeeeery early to beat the hordes, but I think the hordes decided to stay in bed to stay dry. Because we arrived before the sun was up - hmm, did the sun ever get up? - and because of the overcast light, none of my bamboo photos turned out, so use your imagination to picture a tunnel of tall bamboo trees.

I did get a few pictures along our walk in a neighboring park and past the local scenery on the way back to the train station.

The maples are gorgeous.

This little shrine was tucked on tiny road on the edge of a forest. People go to these and pull a heavy rope to ring the big bell, throw some coins in the shrine, and sometimes leave a “prayer card” on a piece of wood or vermillion stake.

By a house was this beautiful floral arrangement in a huge pot.

Somebody had his garden filled with pious accoutrements. The flowers here seem to bloom much later than at home. I saw irises and white lilies flowering, in November!

For the rest of the day we thought it prudent to dry off inside.

  1. The island climate- so different from any land locked country. The maples are stunning , with such a Japanese profile. I've seen them in so many Japanese art works.
