Verena's Story

Of Old

This young lady, Verena, lived back in Roman times, at the time the Romans were bothering Switzerland and taking over lands. She was related to Moritz of St. Moritz (and celebrity ski town) fame. Her family was originally from Egypt, Coptic Christians, drafted into the army. This was also the time when Christians were persecuted, and when Moritz was martyred, so she fled northward. She lived in a cave and helped the sick and the poor. Eventually, she became well known for this and her cave became a pilgrimage site. So, as happens with such sites, somebody built a chapel there, into the cliff side where the cave is. Eventually another small chapel was built by it. A monk (or more recently a nun) has lived on the site in a pretty little cottage with a garden ever since, caring for the place and talking to visitors.

Continuing along the path

Another devil and stone story: the saintly lady was going to be hit by this rock the devil was  throwing, but when she prayed the devil dropped the rock and fled. You can still see his claw marks in the rock.

Approaching the chapel area.

This is the chapel built into the rock around the cave. It is open in the front. Interior pictures to follow.

More to come
