Romanesque nave with Baroque overlays |
A tiny, inconspicuous church, no longer used, but still opened for tourists and staffed by volunteers who love to answer questions. First built here in the 900's! |
The door that used to go in the arch (picture above), until the entrance was changed to the side on the street, as the city filled in. |
A miniature nativity set in clay made by wounded soldiers when the church was used for a hospital at Christmastime during the World War. |
A big church |
An entrance. Italians like horizontal bands of contrasting stone. |
I the Renaissance, sarcophagi/caskets were used as ornaments on churches. |
A very old cloister, built over Roman remains (excavated nearby and showing old floor mosaics) |
A church in use. It had an organ playing. |
Sarcophagi as ornaments? I've never seen that before in all the towns and cities I've been to there.
