It is Fasnacht now, until Ash Wednesday this week. This is one way you can know.
Communities have parades with lots of on-purpose-off-key music, everybody in wild costumes, parties, and decorated buildings. You can always tell the parade routes, because colored confetti is in every crack, no matter how carefully the street sweepers work.
And some places have the first spring flowers coming out.
