Story, Page Four

Tyyfel und Bock

So the people of Uri looked high and low, here and there, up river and down river, for somewhere to build a bridge across the rushing waters. But everywhere was too difficult. Finally in despair one man said, "Do sell der Tyyfel e Brigg bue!" which means, "Only the devil could build a bridge!"

And POOF!

Before he had finished speaking, there stood the devil himself before the people of Uri. He offered them a deal: He would build them a bridge. Now. A good one. The people waited. They did not smile. The devil smiled. He said, "As soon as the bridge is built, the first soul to cross will be mine."

The people looked at each other, then looked down and sighed. But someone said that they could figure something out and they really needed a bridge. And someone else said a bridge would really help their economy. And another said that they could not build a bridge themselves, so why not get some help if it was offered. And they began to talk and discuss and argue. Finally one big man said he would accept the offer for them. Everybody looked at him, but nobody said anything more. So the man summoned his courage and shouted across to the devil, "We accept!"
