Traveling XVI

In Bern

Bern is built on a curve of a river. The banks are very high, so the city has upper and lower levels, and quantities of bridges.

The old city has the typical medieval form of edge to edge buildings, with shops below, and apartments above. The cellar doors you see in in the photo above usually go to a little restaurant or social hub, though some are still used for storage.

All the old fountains remain from the days of horse watering and laundry in the streets.

We went to this tucked away little restaurant on the lower level. We needed to go down a looooong staircase.

Bern’s Symbol is a bear. They have a famous bear park, that has existed, in various forms, for many centuries.

The bear park is at the end of the path to the right of the river in the picture above - by the red roof buildings.

Foreign embassies tend to be found in the nicest old villas. Governments can afford the upkeep.

Goodbye, Bern.
