21.
Son of Man/ Son of God
Jesus is the Son of God, true God, with the full attributes of God,
equal in Majesty with the Father and the Holy Spirit, as He Himself
so often said and showed in His life on earth, by His miracles, His
explanations of His Father, His I AM statements, and His
resurrection. Yet, Jesus, more often than not, 78 times, called
Himself the Son of Man. “Son of Man” obviously refers to His full
humanity, and would cause no offense to those around Him if taken at
face value. But Jesus was subtle for those “with ears to hear.”
For with that designation, He was also making reference to Daniel 7:
13, 14 in which the Son of Man is no ordinary human, but is the great
and terrible and righteous One – the God Man – who will judge the
world and mete out rewards and punishments. When asked directly at
His trial, Jesus said straight out that He is both the Son of God and
the Son of Man who will judge, as Daniel foretold; and it got him
murdered, but it was all part of the Plan. He had to be both true God
and true Man to do the work required of Him. This is the awesome
wonder we celebrate at Christmas, and reflect on with penitence in
Advent, and joyfully expect each day of our sanctified lives.
