Art Museum 2

 Soumaya

More classic sculpture reproductions.

The “Moses” from Rome. Long ago I saw the original in a little church on a side street in Rome.

Persephone captured by Hades

A view of the sculpture hall.

“The Gates of Hell.” Zürich has a set of these at its art museum. Very impressive details.

Copies of the panels from the “Gates of Paradise,” Doors of the cathedral in Florence, by Ghiberti

Then on to the paintings. A little alcove with quiet scenes of fisher folk, church interiors, and a Dys of the Dead display for this weekend.

On to the next floor. This had a variety of objects, with some paintings.

A detail. I did some sketching of intriguing faces and this and that.

A warmer in the shape of the museum building.

An ornate harpsichord

A small sewing chest

Art Museum

 Soumaya

This art museum houses the private collection of Señor Carlos Slim, “the richest man in Mexico.” He has made it open to the public without charge. The collection is wide-ranging, but mainly European works and  some Mexican. Paintings and sculpture make up most of the pieces of the collection, but there are household goods, some historical gowns, some old machines, some musical instruments, and a model Gothic church also.

The building itself is a work of art.

At the entrance is a sculpture of The Thinker, by Rodin.

But first we had to get there, after a stop for brunch.

Little tacos of red chicken, onions, cilantro, pineapple, lime, and we added guacamole. The drink was spiced rice water.

This was sitting on the table next to us, just grinning away.

After eating, we walked to the museum, seeing parks, architecture, and sculptures along the way.

The museum has a wonderful collection of reproductions of classic sculptures. In marble.
And a pinkish light on everything.
