We are blessed to have a dear young lady with us in our home. We took a morning to go to our “ big city” of St. Gallen to see some sights - and get chocolate. The Laderach shop, you know.
I have posted various pictures of the city before…..
The early Saint of the walled up room.
The skinny way
How one trims the hedges
How one gives flowers to friend.
How one gets lost in street mazes. (We did not, because we were with Better Half who has a sense of direction. I would have been lost.)
Pretties everywhere
Where we had our first dinner in the city, in “scary germ” times.
The City Church steeple
…but this time we also visited two churches we had not yet been in. We went to the City Church first. Every old town had its own municipal church, besides whatever monastery church or castle church or other specialty churches or neighborhood churches they had. This one is dedicated to St. Laurance. It was started in the 800’s, shortly after the Irish monks came to convert the Swiss heathens to Christianity. It went through various iterations, until it arrived at its present Neo-Gothic exterior, with subsequent interior renovations. We liked what they did.
From this
They kept most of the early structure, after a big fire, but made it “more churchly.”
Of course, the very old original structure was much smaller, and grew with time and wealth.See below -
The interior
Chancel with organ behind
Pulpit
Stained glass window in chancel, behind the organ.
To be continued, with a visit to the grand Cathedral very close by. The Cathedral was within the original monastery stone walls, and the City Church was just outside the wall.
Way back when people really cared about what churches should look like, they turned out most beautiful! So nice you get to visit all these beauties!
