Andermatt

The Bridge Again

The young people hadn’t seen the the Teufelsbrucke, so on our way home from Disentis, we stopped for a little hike down to the falls and the bridges. (A couple of years ago I did a series of posts about the story of the bridge -but, no, I don’t have time to look up the dates.). The site was worth a second look, or third, or more.

First we had to get there. On the way we saw a family biking up the mountain, with children towed behind. Brave? Or scary?

A favored hiking area.

Some people like to live way away from civilization.

So, we arrived in Andermatt, parked, and hiked toward the bridges.

Many little falls along the way.

And summer wildflowers.

And disconcerting metals stairs to traverse, to get to ordinary bridges. That is a railway track between the water and the road. When there isn’t much room, you stuff things wherever you can.

And, yes, there is a tunnel for the train behind the rock. In fact, this whole mountain area is honeycombed with tunnels. Various random ones are for artillery to shoot out of, if the passers by are not welcome.

These are the Wappen/symbols of the canton (Uri) and the community (Ursern).

The sign says this area has the most well-known canyon in Switzerland (mostly because of its scenic waterfalls, the bridges, and the twisty roads).  The sign also says that this pass area has for a very long time been a trade route -Säumerverkehr über den Gotthard  - (between northern and Southern Europe).

And eventually, after more metal stairs, one gets to the Bridges.

To be continued….
