Lighthouse and Waterford

Hook

Down on Ireland’s southern coastline is a skinny peninsula with “ the oldest light house in the world.” A monk is said to have had a light burning there for sailors in the 500’s. In the Middle Ages a tower was built which is still inside the current tower. The waves are tremendous there.

A Templar Church

An ancient Irish monk’s church. His name means hook, which gave the peninsula its name.

Waterford
We read that this is Ireland’s oldest city. Vikings settled here. Ancient Monestary, Greyfriars Abbey was established here. It still stands, roofless but with strong stone walls.

A history log.

Last Stop of the Day

Here the first Christian monk in Ireland taught. He pre- dated Patrick by a few years. These round towers were fir defense in case of raids, to protect the manuscripts and silverware. The doors were twelve feet height so the ladders could be brought up after entry. They were also belfries.

This old church ruin has Bible story illustrations in relief on the wall in the arches.
This historic site is on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

  3. It was very windy! In some places one needed to hang on to something, and not have open umbrellas. Think of Mary Poppins.
