Wangen 2

Touring

The whole old town area is punctuated with painted fronts on the buildings.

Or Fachwerk construction

Or simply picturesque-ness

Note the old German script on the street signs. This one is Little Button Lane.

Tea and pastries, anyone?

In the scene on the building on the left, Napoleon has ousted his wife, who is exiting his life with her entourage. The history notes she stopped here for a change of horses, requiring 52 for that purpose. This lady didn’t do minimalism with one carry-on bag.
The building of the right depicts the Three Kings, in some odd proportions.

One of several butchers (their sausages are marvelous), with a Maypole scene.

Colors and cobblestones

And a simple fresco with a telling sentiment of the house: “One thing needful.”

…to be continued….
Next time: sculptures. This town was full of them, with stories and folklore and witticisms.

  1. Is it known when the paintings were done? Do they maintain them like repainting the fading ones? I have even more questions but those two to start.

  2. I think someone asked those questions on the city tour. Some of the frescoes were part of the city reconstruction after the big fire in the 1500’s, but many are from the beautification project by the ambitious mayor in the 1970’s, so relatively recent. It is still a profession in Germany, façade painting.
And they tend to use mineral paints, so fading isn’t a problem for a very long time. SMB
