The Churches

Verona has a church on almost every street.

Romanesque nave with Baroque overlays

A tiny, inconspicuous church, no longer used, but still opened for tourists and staffed by volunteers who love to answer questions. First built here in the 900's!

The door that used to go in the arch (picture above), until the entrance was changed to the side on the street, as the city filled in.

A miniature nativity set in clay made by wounded soldiers when the church was used for a hospital  at Christmastime during the World War.

A big church

An entrance. Italians like horizontal bands of contrasting stone.

I the Renaissance, sarcophagi/caskets were used as ornaments on churches.

A very old cloister, built over Roman remains (excavated nearby and showing old floor mosaics)

A church in use. It had an organ playing.

  1. Sarcophagi as ornaments? I've never seen that before in all the towns and cities I've been to there.
