Siena 3

The Library

Off one side of the Duomo is an ornate library of enormous ancient illuminated music manuscripts. The room itself is a wonder, and the books even more so. 


The light is intense here, even in the winter.

The whole periphery of the room looks like this.



Each book is about half my height. (No jokes about short people.) Because books were rare and precious, the whole group of monks had to sing from one copy, so it needed to be big enough for all to see.











Some have suffered wear.



But the gold is still there.
