We don’t know the story of these upsets, and no one told us.
A red-haired Jesus. The Vikings did conquer and settle in southern Italy, so their ruddy looks and locks were introduced into the Italian genome, certainly for the purpose of having blond or red haired models for one’s paintings of saints and divinity, wouldn’t you agree?
Another not-quite work after Raphael, but nice enough for its purpose.
Huge drawings preparatory for paintings
An angry Moses
A superb work, in the style of Caravaggio
Soft and saintly
A very fine Resurrection with a very elongated Christ figure
A very large, very interesting piece. The angular draperies are almost geometric, pre-modern. Note the base figures and their symbolism: presumably that Christ in the womb will be born to be the victor over sin and death. Figs = fertility, prosperity, blessing. Skeletons = death and destruction. Snake = sin and evil.
Goodbye to this museum.
But there are others….
