Georgia, Day Nine

Mountain Passage

Today was difficult for me. Partly it was the roads, or what passes for roads in these mountains, and partly the unhappy midsection as the hours of bumps stretches on. But this evening I now think that I have the stomach bug that Better Half acquired a couple of days ago. Rest and no supper for me tonight.

The road started out fairly normal, but quickly degenerated to an of-road trail, with everything you can imagine that goes with that. It is used by local traffic though. Potholes that can swallow a small car, streams to ford, drop offs, missing roads way, construction, up and around, and down several mountains, four hours long.

The nice part.

No pictures, of course, on the tricky parts, but whatever you can imagine, we did.

That scar on the mountainside is the road. So is the foreground. A Road grader had fallen off the side while working….

Eventually we arrived at the secluded mountain town of Uschguli.
The area is noted for its watch and signal towers.

This one had a small church, an enclosure, numerous fenced cemetery plots, and honey.

And Enzian/ gentians

And tourists out riding local horses in the splendid scenery.

Other side of town, on the way out, for another hour on those roads until we reached out hotel. Don’t think of your kind of hotel - it isn’t. But I am happy for the bed tonight.

Note, this post may get edited later, because my eyes are none too sharp right now, and the photos may need to be edited.

  1. “stomach bug” in a foreign country is almost always food poisoning. First line of defense is always charcoal. Never travel without it. It makes the difference between one day sick and three or more .

  2. Hope you feel better. Soon. Sorry about your bug. Don’t envy you on the roads. Yikes.
