Spelling in Latin letters is fairly arbitrary here.
After breakfast, we left the Palace hotel and Borjomi, and headed east again, on the main highway, passing through the suburbs of Tbilisi. We went through crop lands, small villages, and open fields. We saw little fortresses and watch towers and ruined stone walls. Eventually, the road went up, and up, and around until we got to a small city hugging a mountain side - Signagi, where we will be one night.
It is a very up and down and around town. Two streets can be side by side with ten feet of elevation distance between them around a hairpin turn.
Here we were on an upper street, and you see a lower street below.
The picture “everybody” takes while visiting.
A different one. Maria says it doesn’t work, missing a chain.
All on hillsides.
Room available…..at least it has a view

The town wall
We went to this church, just as the old woman was closing up, but for Maria’s smiling request she let us in, and told Maria about it in Russian. It’s good Maria has kept up with her language studies. The church is 17th century. The saints venerated there were St. Nino, St. Giorgi, St. Nicholas, and the Virgin. And the candle cost one Lari, and yes, I could take a picture. And two girls came in as we were leaving, pulling out scarves. I think she let them in, too.
We think no slashing was going on - maybe they meant SLUSH.
A Philosopher, in the town square.
A wine fair, called the Signagi Art Festival, was being set up.
A bit of history in the square

And the menu
Interesting town. Hopefully you stay for the festivities. What do people survive on there? Tourism? Some very quaint pictures but not sure I’d survive the journey there! Anybody there fly?
ReplyDeleteSo just the three of you now?
