Georgia, Day Sixteen

Hills

Today was a driving day to see a couple of sites in the hills.
We drove through big hills, and small hills, rock hills, and dry hills.

Green hills

River cut hills

Burning hills. A fire had started and a helicopter was ferrying water to it. Entirely inadequate in that abundance of fuel.

Hills with fortress ruins.

And hills with dwelling caves, where we stopped.

(Cave Interior pictures from Maria)

After drinks by the River….

…we drove on, close to the Turkish border, to see a renovated fortress (EU money).

A hotel within the walls

Inside the mosque, built over a church foundation

Then back to the hotel

We saw the fire had spread significantly in the six plus intervening hours.

Huge flames were visible off and on (but not in photos)

We can see the smoke from our hotel. The fire is about 20 kilometers away. Tomorrow we head in the opposite direction.
