Looking Glass Book

Another Class Project

Today I finished another class project that has been in the works for over a month. I needed to find uncommon materials for it, and try things that were new to me, all of which took time. I enjoyed the process and learned a lot.

The flowers are formed from two-part epoxy clay. The cover boards have structure paste raised stencilling and various mixed media techniques. The "looking glass" is two-part crystal resin. The same resin is on the bits of ancient (1700's) Latin book text (about divine Scripture) to allow them to be raised from the surface. The corners and inset tags and owl-in-medallion are brass. The top brass stamping has a woman's head, referring to the Proverb's passages about personified Wisdom calling the Simple to learn from her. The little tags say "faith" and "hope" and "love." The beads are glass. The spine is leather with waxed thread for  sewing the signatures in the spine. The jump rings are made-by-me of brass wire. The pages inside are of a variety of papers with green inking on their edges.

The book theme is Wisdom, to which all the little words and motifs and and elements refer.
At some time I hope to fill it with accumulated words of wisdom.

  1. Wow, I just love how detailed it is, and how you give meaning and import to the details. It's so much richer to see a theme, instead of pretty things just randomly thrown together.

  2. I LOVE IT. Great job! And yes, putting it together with a theme was really cool.

  3. I think this is your best project so far. Partly because it's practical and useful, of course, but also because, as Katie said, there's a theme and lots of symbolism and many pretty, hidden details.
